Glide Sync and Glide Mobile Launched

Fri Mar 16, 2007 - 10:22 AM EDT - By Jennifer Chappell

Overview

I'm always reading threads on forums in which Treo owners who are Mac users ask if "this or that" program is supported by Mac. Seems that Mac users get left out many times when new apps are released. I've just recently bought an Apple PowerBook so I'm beginning to see what this is all about. But I just read about a wonderful service for Mac users yesterday that might just brighten their world a little.

TransMedia officially launched yesterday Glide Sync and Glide Mobile services for Mac users. Mac users will now be able to access, edit and share virtually all of their files stored on their Macs from a wide selection of cell phones.

Glide OS 2.0 Beta supports the following Treo phones for Mac users:

  • Palm Treo 650 (Supports Streaming Media)
  • Palm Treo 680 (Supports Streaming Media)
  • Palm Treo 700P (Supports Streaming Media)
  • Palm Treo 700W (Supports Streaming Media)
  • Palm Treo 750 (Supports Streaming Media)
"Traditionally, Mac users have had to jump through hoops to use third party devices and software," said TransMedia Chairman and CEO, Donald Leka. "No longer. Now Mac users can glide effortlessly between their cell phones and Macs."

Glide automatically syncs your photos, music, videos, documents, iCal calendars, Mac Address Book contacts, and Safari, Camino and Firefox bookmarks from your Mac via the Internet so you can access virtually all of your digital stuff from your cell phone. Glide achieves the ideal of anytime, anywhere access by making it possible to synchronize all of your files on your local desktop(s) to and from Glide's hosted web services. Glide's compatibility engine then serves up your files in the proper format and bit rate for access on various devices and for easy sharing.

With Glide, Mac users are able to:

    • Compose a document on your mobile device, save it and then access and edit it later on your Mac without the need to email it from your phone.
    • Edit photos with 75 photo manipulation tools and order prints all on your mobile device or Mac.
    • Send large files in 5k emails using your .mac email address with no attachment limits and without filling up the recipient's inbox.
    • Create elegant multimedia websites from your cell phone or Mac and edit later from either device.

I know some Treo/Mac owners who are power users and I bet they'd go for this Glide service. Talk about anytime, anywhere access; Glide seems to serve that up big time.

"This is a well-designed and ambitious service." - Walter S. Mossberg, CNBC

"Microsoft Vista might just be the past." - Jim Louderback, Editor-In-Chief, Ziff Davis

"Near perfect control over sending large media files from cell phones" - Ron Miller, Information Week

"40GB of data in a tiny email while on the go is powerful." - James Kim, CNET

"Glide Mobile turns mobile handset into a portable desktop." - Thomas Claburn, Information Week

Thomas Claburn of Information Week says that Glide gives supported phones music and video playback capabilities that are comparable to those of a video iPod. The difference is that files are streamed from Glide's hosted service instead of residing on the mobile device.

Mac users can sign up for a free Glide account today at www.glidedigital.com on their Macs or on their cell phones at www.glidemobile.com.
