Cingular to take AT&T brand

Mon Nov 21, 2005 - 6:52 PM EST - By James Hromadka

What was old is new again

Last Friday, SBC completed its merger with AT&T. As a result, SBC will take on AT&T's name and will also use the AT&T name instead of Cingular in most wireless markets.

The breakup of Ma Bell seems to have completely reverted back to the way things were. AT&T was broken up into "baby bell" companies, and now one of the baby bells, Southwestern Bell, has bought AT&T back and is using the AT&T name for all of its services.

As an SBC customer for my landline (I use T-Mobile with my Treo), I'll have to get used to not tossing mail from AT&T thinking it's junk mail anymore. Cingular users will also have to get used to the name change, and the orange stick figure will be missed. More details on the change can be found in this USATODAY article.
