Handspring trims staff

Wed Sep 25, 2002 - 7:08 PM EDT - By Marcus Adolfsson

Handspring earlier this week laid off 20 percent of its workforce, about 80 employees. Most layoffs occurred in the marketing division, but other divisions were streamlined as well.

As Handspring is shifting its focus to the Treo line from the Visor line, it is also shifting its marketing strategy to letting carriers do most of the advertising. An example of this is approach is the recent Treo 300 introduction; the device appears frequently in SprintPCS Vision ads.

Handspring now has around 300 employees. Additional information on the layoffs will be given during the quarter results conference call on October 17.
