palmOne reduces work force, shifts focus to Smartphones

Wed Jan 21, 2004 - 3:06 PM EST - By Marcus Adolfsson

About 100 employees of PalmOne lost their jobs today, as the company continues to streamline after acquiring Handspring late last year. Two engineering teams for wireless products and handheld products bore the brunt of the job losses, after they were consolidated into a single group. The company also announced that they are increasing the investment levels in its smartphone product families, and reducing the investments in traditional organizers.

"We intend to maintain our lead in the handheld-computer category with new, innovative solutions while we shift more investment toward the higher-growth smartphone category," said Todd Bradley, palmOne president and chief executive officer. "The Handspring acquisition continues to deliver synergies, and tough but strategic decisions coupled with operational discipline enable us to reduce overall spending. We are committed to delivering growth and profitability, and these actions will move us closer to those goals."

After the work force reduction, palmOne will have approximately 740 employees.
