The Apple iPhone Amusing to Ed Colligan

Tue Nov 21, 2006 - 2:09 PM EST - By Jennifer Chappell

Overview

According to the San Jose Mercury News, Palm CEO Ed Colligan was at a Churchill Club breakfast on Thursday morning when New York Times correspondent John Markoff asked him some questions regarding the possibility of an upcoming Apple iPhone.

Colligan seemed humored about the idea that Apple Computer could effortlessly win customers in the smart-phone arena.

"We've learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone," he said. "PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They're not going to just walk in."

What if Steve Jobs' company did bring an iPod phone to market? Well, it would probably use WiFi technology and could be distributed through the Apple stores and not the carriers like Verizon or Cingular, Colligan theorized.

Sooooo...... is Apple serious competition for Palm? Does Colligan see a possible Apple phone as a mere fly to swat? I can't imagine Apple coming up with a phone that could go up against one of Palm's Treos. But Apple does have a knack for producing some great devices that have that wonderful "simplicity" about them, and that simplicity is what I like about the Palm devices. I'm anxious to see what Apple does come up with.
