If you've followed the Tip o' the Week column, you'll notice that I like to either present a handy and sometimes-useful tip or how-to, and sometimes I like to promote useful applications that are of the "FREE" variety. There are product reviews aplenty on TreoCentral, but usually the reviewed app will require a credit card number to unlock the full capabilities of the app. Now and then, it's nice to recognize those who give back to the mobile community with their labors of love -- free apps! In this week's Tip, I will shine the spotlight on Gil Bouhnick and his website, SpoonTools.com.
A couple of the apps on SpoonTools.com that I really like are SpoonAlarm and SpooNotes. Again, both apps are free and offer some great functionality to your WM Treo. There are other apps on Gil's site as well. Although the apps are free, there is a link for donations. If you have a PayPal account, the donation is even more easy to make.
SpoonAlarm is an alarm application that, as the site states, combines "friendly interface with loud mp3-based alarm capabilities." This app makes it very easy to set up an alarm, select one of your favorite mp3 songs, and even configure your snoozing option, all without a stylus. It takes advantage of the one-handed operation of the WM Treo. The new version even has a countdown clock. This app is designed to provide a simple yet powerful replacement for the standard default WM alarm on your device.
SpooNotes is a free note-taking application that features different pen widths and colors, zoom options, picture notes (yes, write on a favorite picture. Cool!), automatic scrolling within the note, and more. For me, sometimes it's nice to grab the stylus and either doodle or just make a few quick notes. It's even better when the app I'm using for notes is free.
Head on over to SpoonTools.com and check out these apps and the others on the site. Its members of the WM community like Gil Bouhnick that makes the WM Treo a better device with more functionality. If you like what you see, just download and start using the apps. If they work well for you, then don't forget to leave Gil a tip!
Speaking of tips - that's it for this week's Tip. If you are a developer with some helpful and/or fun software or if you have a Tip that you wish to pass on to the rest of the community, just email me at: [email protected]. Tune in next week for another Tip!
