Trend: U.S. Mobile Data Market Shows Strong Growth

Tue Aug 10, 2010 - 12:56 PM EDT - By Annie Latham

According to data compiled by Chetan Sharma Consulting, the U.S. mobile data market grew 6 percent quarter-over-quarter in Q2 2010, exceeding service revenues of $13.2 billion. That's a 22 percent annual increase.

Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) and AT&T (NYSE:T) together accounted for 75 percent of Q2's data revenue growth --the two rivals now represent 70 percent of all U.S. mobile data revenues, as well as 62 percent of the nationwide subscriber base.

Other interesting findings include:

>> 31% of the US subscription base is now smartphones. The pace of product introduction is accelerating with each quarter.

>> Microsoft announced its comeback with the W7 commercial launch imminent. The change in UI was refreshing and the expectations are quite high. W7 v2 is likely around the corner to update on the flaws of v1.

>> HP acquired Palm in an attempt to become relevant again in the mobile device space. It has been an action packed 1H 2010 and we can expect more of the same for the remainder of the year.

Also noted in the Chetan Sharma Consulting post, the firm has put together a unique, all-day Mobile Future Forward Executive Summit. Scheduled to participate are "some of the sharpest minds in the industry, folks who both have the vision to shape the evolution and the authority to invest billions of dollars this decade to make things happen."
