The Future is Treo

SMS - It's not just for text anymore

SMS is going to be as big an impact in America as it has been in the rest of the world. Quick Chat, an AIM application that uses SMS, has a lot of potential, but I have had trouble using it. What I would like is an application that let me send Nokia pictures to/from the Treo.

Remember that Nextel commercial where the presenter cannot give his speech because he is waiting for his partner to arrive with the slides and other information? Here's my vision:
  • Man 1 realizes his buddy is going to be late and sends him a message, "Where are you? I need those Q3 trends!"
  • Man 2, stuck in traffic, sends a Nokia picture that's around 70x25 with the information
  • The show goes on
Sure that's not the best example, but it shows what the Treo could offer. You can even send these pictures from a computer. Down the line, we could be getting weather satellite maps, driving directions, etc., all using SMS. Yeah GPRS is going to be the great savior and let us send full-size pictures at decent speeds, but that is still a ways off. I want to receive SMS images now, not later.

This is just a glimpse of the possibilities that the Handspring Treo brings to handheld computing. The smartphone market is finally heating up; with the help of some key applications, the Treo will be even better than it is today.
