In this, the fourth full week of 2006, there were some interesting stories impacting the Treo world.


Coming Soon� A Day Without Blackberries


No doubt, the one getting tons of traction is the possibility that sales and service of Blackberry handhelds will be shut down. On Monday, January 23, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Research in Motion�s (RIM) request to review its dispute with patent-holding firm NTP. With the possibility that Blackberry�s wireless email door will shut, there could be a stampede towards Palm�s Treo 650 and Treo 700w.

Treo NOT a Smartphone?


Another story making the rounds is that cellular phone service provider, Cingular, doesn�t consider the Treo a smartphone.

According to published reports, in a posting on a ZDNet blog about the launch of a Microsoft Windows Mobile smartphone by Cingular, John Kampfe, director of media and industry analyst relations at Cingular, said that the Treo 700w handheld device is not a smartphone but a handheld. He also said that the Treo 650, which Cingular sells, is not a smartphone.

Not exactly the way to win friends and influence people, especially since there are a bunch of Blackberry users that may be in the market for a Treo. Looks like Cingular may have gotten themselves dropped to the bottom of the list of providers (behind Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon).

Palm Updates Sprint Treo 650


Speaking of Sprint, this week Palm released a ROM update for the Sprint PCS version of the Treo 650 smartphone that includes a number of enhancements. According to Palm, this software update (version 1.13) makes the following changes:
  • Integrates the Treo 650 E911 Updater to improve the ability of emergency response personnel to locate users who dial 911 from the Treo 650 smartphone
  • Improves memory handling when using background applications such as GoodLink
  • Includes changes made in previous ROM updates for this smartphone.

    FileMaker Mobile Announced for Palm OS and Pocket PC handheld


    FileMaker, Inc. announced the immediate availability of FileMaker Mobile 8, a companion to FileMaker Pro 8 designed specifically for Palm OS and Pocket PC handheld devices. The new FileMaker Mobile 8 now goes beyond synchronizing with local desktop databases only. For the first time, it allows users to synchronize handhelds with databases on FileMaker Server 8 and FileMaker Server 8 Advanced.

    FileMaker Mobile 8 runs on the Palm Treo 650, and many other Palm and Windows Mobile compatible handheld devices, allowing individuals and mobile workgroups to extend the productivity of FileMaker solutions from the office to their handheld device. FileMaker Mobile 8 supports a range of applications as simple as lists to more complex solutions such as inventory records, customer information, student records, work orders, research notes, or help-desk records. In addition to providing one-button, two-way synchronization, FileMaker Mobile 8 allows flexible data entry and viewing features.
