Bluetooth Overview

With the SDIO update for the Treo 90, Handspring has given the device the expansion opportunities of its Visor cousins by using expansion cards that are available for Palm handhelds. One expansion card that gets a lot of attention is the Palm Bluetooth Card.

For the uninitiated, Bluetooth is a personal technology that allows users to wirelessly connect handhelds, phones, and other devices among each other in an ad hoc network called a piconet. When two devices connect with each other, one device is the master and the other is the slave. A piconet can have up to eight active devices (one master and seven slaves).

When two devices connect to each other, they go through a process called pairing. After making the devices discoverable (turning Bluetooth on), they can connect to each other and form a personal area network (PAN).

In the coming weeks, I will be examining the impact that Bluetooth can have to handheld computers, and more specifically, the impact that it can have on the Treo.
