Engadget Mobile is reporting via Mobile Roar that the news of Palm's app store came by way of Palm's new Developer Website. The store is called App Catalog.
Engadget Mobile says:
The name isn't terribly important, but the concept is critical -- every mobile platform of consequence is moving in the direction of intelligent, on-the-go app management, and with the Pre, Palm can't afford to be any different in that regard.
Engadget Mobile also says that graphically intensive, heavily interactive apps such as games aren't likely to happen with Palm's webOS. Engadget Mobile states that they've confirmed in talking to Palm that Pre gaming was never a priority for them during the development cycle.
Dieter talked about this in one of his recent articles:
I pressed on the issue of "immersive" applications like games that would require technologies not available via web technologies. Although Palm could not officially comment on how access would work beyond their 'Mojo' framework, they did say that they would work to ensure that such apps were possible (we suspect that "extra help" would come on a case-by-case basis for the time being, a suspicion Palm could not comment on). Beyond that Palm couldn't say, but it does seem clear that while there may not be widespread "true" native app development for everybody, solutions in that direction will come eventually.
So, from what Palm told Dieter, it sounds like games will be possible at some point.
I sure am looking forward to seeing that App Catalog!
