Treo-Tooth

And the sync goes blue...

That wireless freedom does not come without a price, however. Bluetooth shares the same frequency (2.4 GHz) as 802.11 Wireless Ethernet and some cordless phones. In my home office, I have a nice wireless network going with three computers on it: My PowerBook, my wife's iMac, and her old Dell desktop. All three machines are using wireless ethernet.

I kept an eye on the Airport meter on my Mac to see if it was affected by Bluetooth, and it didn't seem to really affect the signal strength on my PowerBook. I then did a test HotSync using Bluetooth and USB. A Bluetooth HotSync with everything set to Do Nothing took 23 seconds, while a USB connection took 11 seconds.

I did have some trouble getting Bluetooth working again after doing a USB HotSync. Actually, I had a lot of trouble. Two Mac OS X kernal panics (equivalent to a Windows bluescreen) later and repeated attempts at re-pairing later, I got the two talking to each other again. Bluetooth is still not as polished as it needs to be.

Overall, Bluetooth HotSync is nice for travellers that don't want to carry a HotSync cable, but since you need a cable anyway to recharge the Treo 90, it is not as beneficial as it could be, especially since Bluetooth HotSync is slower than USB.

The real benefits of Bluetooth are made known when you start doing things with the Treo 90 that you couldn't normally do. In an upcoming article, I will look at how you can use the Treo 90 with a Bluetooth mobile phone to browse the internet and send SMS messages. (Note, I am still waiting on a T68i to arrive, so this feature may be delayed)
