Wireless in Seattle

Fri Oct 18, 2002 - 3:44 PM EDT - By James Hromadka

Getting Home

Sunday morning brought a nice, scenic ride to the airport. Seattle reminds me of Colorado. I'll miss the mountainsides and beautiful trees lining some of the highways.

Seattle has much tighter security than Houston. In Houston, all they did was swab my laptop and make me turn it on. Seattle's metal detector is much less forgiving. I had my shoes and belt off at one point, and I hated that security did not have a nice foam tray for me to set the PowerBook on and instead used hard plastic. You would think being next to Microsoft, Seattle would have its fair share of laptop users.

Once I was at the gate, I had the option to hop onto Wayport's wireless service, but I decided I didn't really need to spend $6.95 for service when I was only waiting an hour for my flight. Good thing I didn't, because I soon discovered the power outlet I was using did not work. I think I may have to break down and buy a second battery for this thing.

The flight to Houston was uneventful, and I got to watch MIB II (the flight to Seattle had About a Boy -- yuck!) so the flight was pretty fast. Overall, I had a great time on the trip. The devices I brought along worked flawlessly, and I got to make some new friends and see the Space Needle. Now it's back to Houston and hopefully warmer weather!
