Another reason I'm not getting an iPhone 3G

Thu Jul 3, 2008 - 12:15 PM EDT - By Jennifer Chappell

No 3G!

I saw an interesting article over at Gear Diary just now in which they show an AT&T iPhone US 3G coverage map. Man alive, check out that map! Wow, I didn't realize that there were so few areas that do have 3G! I just assumed that my little neck of the woods in North Carolina was one of the few areas that "didn't" have the 3G coverage. I hadn't looked at an AT&T coverage map in awhile so had no idea.

I wrote earlier that I wasn't going to upgrade to the iPhone 3G. One of the reasons is that I rarely use the phone app. I used my iPhone mainly as a media device to watch videos and listen to music and to surf the web. My trusty Centro is my main phone plus I use it for a number of other things. Too many to list here actually. I love, love, love it!

Well, another good reason that I'm not going to bother getting the iPhone 3G can be seen in the map above. My area still doesn't have 3G and probably won't for a long long time. So why bother getting one if I can't even enjoy the 3G speeds?

Yes, the iPhone 3G will have GPS ability, but I really couldn't care less about that. I have about 3 devices that have GPS built-in and I've never once used GPS on any of them. Maybe if I actually got out and traveled once in awhile, I'd use the GPS though. I'm hoping to make at least one beach trip this summer with the whole family, so that would be a good time to try out some GPS. But I sure wouldn't buy the new iPhone just because of it having GPS.

So for now, I'm happy that I bought an iPod touch and gave my iPhone to my Mom. She is really enjoying it. If she's happy, I'm happy!

If my area ever gets 3G, I'll probably be drooling and ready to take a bite of that new Apple product. By the time that happens though, the iPhone 4 will probably be out. ;-)
