Editor's eBook Picks of the Week

Mon Aug 18, 2008 - 4:25 PM EDT - By Jennifer Chappell

This week I want to tell you about a horror book and a paranormal book. I haven't read either one, but they're both books that I'm putting on my wish list today. If you read a lot of books, you know how fun it can be and how reading can put you in a whole different world. If you don't read much and just like to flip through magazines, you should definitely try reading an eBook sometime. I think you'd like it. Some authors can really put you inside their story, and when they write well enough and describe the characters and the surroundings well enough, you'll feel as if you're really there and that you know the people you're reading about. And when that happens, you don't want to come to the end of the story too soon. It's always hard for me to say goodbye to the characters in a great book. And lots of times we're lucky enough to have authors who write books in which they use the same characters from other books. Sometimes this happens in a book series, but sometimes it just happens and the familiar characters are there and you don't even have to have read the previous book to be able to follow along.

And don't forget, there are soooooooooo many categories of eBooks to choose from! I'm sure that there is bound to be at least one category that everyone would like. Sometimes I like to get a little scared while reading, so I'll pick up a good horror eBook. And of course these are best read late at night. ;-)

I enjoy reading books by John Saul, who writes some great horror stories. I've read several of his books, mostly in paper pack (this was before I ever had a Palm device), but I enjoyed them all. I have read "Midnight Voices" in eBook format and it was a great read.

Anyway, I noticed a new eBook today by John Saul entitled "Faces of Fear". This sounds like a good plastic surgery thriller. I always love reading stuff about plastic surgery or seeing some of the interesting plastic surgery "gone bad" shows on television. If John Saul wrote the book, you know something bad is going to happen to the person having the plastic surgery. LOL!

Description:

New York Times bestselling author John Saul is a master at writing novels that chill the bones, curdle the blood, and tap into our darkest fears. He creates characters so real that you'll feel as if they're friends or family, and throws them into situations so terrifying that you won't be able to look away until you turn the final page. Now, in Faces of Fear, Saul proves that there's a fine line between perfection and madness. Fifteen-year-old Alison Shaw may not be beautiful, but she doesn't really care: She'd much rather read a good book than primp in front of a mirror anyway. But Alison's gorgeous mother, Risa, knows that beauty can be a key to success and wishes only the best for her daughter, especially when Risa marries a widowed plastic surgeon and moves Alison from Santa Monica to Bel Air. Beauty may be only skin deep, but to the denizens of Bel Air it means the world. Everywhere mother and daughter look, they are surrounded by beautiful people, many of whom have benefited from the skills of Alison's new stepfather, the charismatic Peter Dunn. Peter is certain he can turn Alison into a vision of loveliness, and Risa--drawn in by his cool confidence--is delighted. Reluctantly, Alison agrees to undergo the first procedure, and her transformation begins. But soon Alison discovers a picture of Peter's first wife. To Alison's horror, she notices a resemblance between the image in the photo and the work her stepfather is doing on her. Though Risa refuses to acknowledge the strange similarity, Alison becomes increasingly frightened. Digging further into her stepfather's murky past, Alison uncovers dark secrets--and even darker motives--and realizes that her worst fears are fast becoming her reality.

Yep, I'll have to get this one and see what happens to poor Alison. You can get "Faces of Fear" here for $18.00

Another eBook caught my eye today. "Out of Time" sounds like a paranormal/thriller as it has some cool psychic phenomena plus some bad guys chasing the good guys.

Description:

Curator Jillian Talbot has a Second-Sight--an ESP that lets her see into the distant pasts of relics, artifacts. Retired tomb-raider Simon Bonner--entrusted with an ancient crystal lens he doesn't want and a death-threat he doesn't need--learns Jillian is the only woman who can divine this lens's purpose. Jillian's eyes can "read" the lens, and the lens sharpens and broadens her Second-Sight. Glyphs carved on the lens lead her and Simon to Mexico to find a mythic treasure. As murderous criminals pursue them, Jillian and Simon discover romance, passion, and heroism.

Sounds interesting. And the price isn't too bad either. You can get "Out of Time" here for only $6.99. The author is C.J. Barry, who also writes under the name Samantha Graves, as he did with "Out of Time".

I downloaded eReader 1.1 on my iPod touch last week and it was really easy. I went to the AppStore on my iPod touch and went to ebooks. Then I searched for eReader. I found the option to download eReader 1.1 and clicked on it and downloaded it. And for Free of course! Since I already have a login at eReader's website, I went there on my iPod touch and went to my bookshelf. I had a couple of ebooks there that I haven't read yet, so I downloaded them to my iPod. It was all very simple and fast. I've been enjoying reading ebooks on my iPod touch. It's very similar to reading on my Centro and Treos except for the screen being larger and when I want to turn the page, I swipe my finger on the screen to the right and the page turns. Pretty neat!

Win an iPod touch!

Besides having the chance to win store credit or micropay dollars, eReader is also giving away an iPod touch! Details are below:

Even if you don't have an iPhone or iPod touch you can still win! To qualify for a drawing for a free 8 gigabyte iPod touch simply log in to either your eReader.com or Fictionwise.com account and make sure you are signed up to receive our newsletters. Log in any time between August 1 and August 22, and you must be opted in for newsletters by the end of day August 22. One iPod touch will be awarded randomly to a lucky customer who meets those requirements. Customers who do not live in the USA or Canada will receive a $300 store credit/Micropay instead of being shipped an iPod touch, due to legal and import restriction reasons.

Sounds like a great contest! I'm going to go and download one of the above eBooks today so I can get my contest entry in. I know I could easily download a free ebook to enter, but I'm really getting the urge to read "Out of Time", so I'm going to have to get that one. ;-) Hurry up and get your entry in because we only have until August 22nd! Good luck!

Hey eReader, how about a contest for us Palm Centro and Treo owners too??! We've been reading your ebooks faithfully for years and years on our Palm devices, and it would be nice to have a chance to win some store credits and a new Centro or a new Treo 800w! Come on eReader, How about it? ;-)
