2002: a Year of Transition

Mon Dec 23, 2002 - 7:06 PM EST - By James Hromadka

The Future

The impact that wireless technology will have on handheld computers cannot be stressed enough. I have been using a Sony Ericsson T68i and have been loving the compact size and added touches such as seeing pictures of the person that is calling you. The Treo still has the edge in managing contacts and calendar info, but the T68i lets me send SMS messages over Bluetooth. Eventually, handheld computers/phones will be interacting with everything around us.

I myself am currently undergoing a transition, but a far more unpleasant one. My wife and I are currently going through a divorce, so I have not been able to write for the past few months. I hope to have more regular articles for you soon.

So 2002 has been a year of transition. What will 2003 have in store? I see the continued progression of wireless handhelds and a greater focus on features, as handheld computers move towards commodity status. The $99 Palm Zire is only the beginning. Handhelds will become even more targeted, with handhelds being released that fit the needs of anyone. If the U.S. economy improves, I think that the handheld market will take off again -- but only time will tell.
