Twobile: Twitter on your Treo!

Tue Feb 10, 2009 - 10:49 AM EST - By Brian Hart

Twobile

You may have heard the expression that there are two certainties in life: death and taxes. A close second to these certainties are people using Twitter and mobile phones. There are lots of mobile Twitter apps out there to help the nomadic Twitter'ers feed their addiction, but it certainly doesn't hurt to have a FREE Twitter app for your Windows Mobile Treo. Enter Twobile v1.6.8!

According to the developer, Infinitum Software, Twobile is a labor of love and, like Twitter itself, is free for personal use. The developer asks politely for a donation if you like and use the product, mainly to keep the site up and running, as well as provide future updates to Twobile as needed.

Twobile allows for the use of many of Twitter's features without being tied to your desktop. No matter where you go, you can keep track of your friends, messages, replies, public timeline, followers, statuses, favorites, and featured. I dare say it's not incredibly fancy, but it's very functional and the lack of shiny graphics definitely helps with the speed of the app. So far I've entered two updates and checked on some Tweets from my friends list. If a Tweet has graphics, they seem to show up just fine on Twobile. The five-way works nicely also, allowing for one-handed operation as you Tweet away.

Installation was very simple - I just synced the .cab file to my Treo Pro and entered my user name and password when prompted. A small "Twobile" icon now appears in the lower right corner of my Today screen so Twobile is easily accessible without digging into the menus. Twobile doesn't take up much memory space, but if your space is very limited (ok, yes, like most WM devices are), then you can install the app on your storage card and it will work just fine. The developer also assures that the app connects directly with Twitter so your data should be safe - no 3rd party server is involved.

As I said, I'm using Twobile on my Treo Pro right now and it's working just fine. If you use Twitter and want a way to use it when you are out and about, this is a nice free app to download and use. If you don't Twitter, maybe this is a good way to start - with the convenience of a mobile Twitter app. Thanks very much to Infinitum Software for contributing to the Windows Mobile community!

If you are a developer with some helpful and/or fun software or if you have a tip or how-to that you wish to pass on to the rest of the community, just email me at: [email protected]. Thanks!
