RF Micro Devices inside Treo 600

Tue Sep 2, 2003 - 5:49 PM EDT - By Michael Ducker

The press release:

"RF Micro Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: RFMD), a leading provider of proprietary radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) for wireless communications applications, today announced production shipments of the RF3140 PowerStar(TM) power amplifier module for the next-generation Treo 600 Smartphone by Handspring (Nasdaq: HAND), a leading innovator in personal communications and handheld computing.
The Handspring Treo 600 Smartphone combines the features of a wireless handheld device and a mobile phone into a small, narrow design. The Treo 600 features a Fast Palm OS 5-based organizer with messaging, email and web browsing, as well as a fully integrated QWERTY keyboard, digital camera and SD/MMC slot for memory expansion or system backup and the ability to add wireless networking capabilities like Bluetooth(R) wireless technology.
Chris Keating, RF program manager for Handspring, Inc., said, "The Treo 600 offers consumers an exceptional wireless experience by combining voice, wireless email and data access in an extremely compact and easy-to-use format. RF Micro Devices' RF3140 power amplifier module helped streamline our design process by significantly reducing engineering time and resources in product test, which enabled us to accelerate the product to market."
Eric Creviston, corporate vice president of wireless products at RF Micro Devices, said, "The Treo 600 Smartphone combines the worlds of communication, information and entertainment in a compact handheld device, and we're pleased our market-leading RF3140 PowerStar PA module was selected to be the critical power amplifier component in this breakthrough device."
Creviston continued, "Through the unique product attributes of our PowerStar family of power amplifiers with integrated power control, we help reduce the resources necessary and time required to get our customers' products to market. RF Micro Devices seeks to enable smaller and more functional convergence products by designing innovative, highly integrated PA solutions that reduce power consumption and consume less board space. We are the only wireless solutions provider with product availability in cellular, wireless LAN, Bluetooth technology, GPS and satellite radio, and we anticipate continued growth as convergence products, such as the Treo 600, continue to gain popularity with consumers."
RFMD's PowerStar GSM power amplifier modules are the world's best selling power amplifier modules with integrated power control. The PowerStar product portfolio has generated more than $90 million in revenues since the first PowerStar product was introduced in September 2001. Due in part to the growing success of its PowerStar PA modules, RF Micro Devices recently became the fastest company to ship its 250 millionth power amplifier module, and the Company expects it will continue to gain share in the power amplifier market.
The quad-band RF3140 is designed for use as the final RF amplifier in single- and multi-band handheld digital cellular equipment (GSM 850/EGSM/DCS/PCS) and other applications in the 824 MHz to 849 MHz, 880 MHz to 915 MHz, 1710 MHz to 1785 MHz and 1850 MHz to 1910 MHz bands. The RF3140 features integrated power control circuitry, eliminating the need for directional couplers, detector diodes, power control ASICs and other power control circuitry. The RF3140 is manufactured using GaAs HBT for the power amplifier and silicon CMOS for the integrated power control circuitry. The power amplifier module is packaged in a 10 x 10 mm leadless chip carrier and is available now from RFMD."
