The Missing Sync for Palm OS

Fri Dec 3, 2004 - 9:56 PM EST - By James Hromadka

Expansion Cards

Missing Sync allows you to copy files directly from your Mac to a Treo expansion card using a special Missing Sync application that gets installed to the Treo. Run the application while the Treo is connected to your Mac over USB and it will automatically mount the expansion card to your Mac's desktop. You can then copy files to and from the expansion card as needed.

When a card is mounted, iTunes will have a special Missing Sync entry that you can copy .mp3 files to and manage just as you would an iPod. I'm still waiting for an AAC player for Palm-based devices, but there are MP3 players available.

Missing Sync also provides support for iPhoto. Select the pictures you want to transfer to the expansion card and then click on File | Export. The Export Photos dialog box now includes a Missing Sync tab. For the Treo 600, I set the images to scale to 160x160 (320x320 for the Treo 650) and then click Export, which defaults to the DCIM folder on the expansion card, which is the correct location. Click Ok and then the pictures will be transfered. You can then use SplashPhoto (included but not installed by default) to view the pictures or the Pics&Videos application that comes with the Treo 650.

You can also copy files manually to the expansion card. iTunes will eventually update to show the changes, but don't do it at the same time iTunes is copying files or you may end up with duplicates.

When you're done connecting to the expansion card, it is important to eject it properly from the Mac. Do this by dragging the drive icon (my SD card was called NONAME) to the Trash or Control-click the icon and click Eject. Not doing this could cause corruption and data loss on the card.

Mini Sync

If you click the Zoom control (the green bubble), Missing Sync shrinks to a small window that stays out of the way. You can still switch sync and sharing modes, change Conduit Profiles, and drag files to the PDA icon or expansion card icon for installation next time you sync. If you have files to be installed, the PDA or expansion card icons will indicate this as well, similarly to how Apple's Mail application icon shows how many unread messages you have.

The zoomed window is reminiscent of iTunes, and the only thing I don't like about the window is that the font is smaller than in the main program. I also noticed that the red, green, and yellow bubbles don't change color when you hover the mouse curser over Missing Sync when it's in the background. Clicking on them will take the appropriate action, however.
