Canon PIXMA iP90 Printer

Thu Jan 26, 2006 - 10:21 PM EST - By Harv Laser

Lots of controls. All paper types.

If you're on-the-go and low on ink the iP90 printer's "Ink Usage Control" setting lets you print about 1.5 times more pages without lowering print quality much. And, if you run out of black ink, just choose the "Use Composite Black" option and the iP90 continues to print black using a combo of color inks in the "Ink Usage Control" setting. These features are a handy safety net when you don't have extra ink on hand. The print head cradles both a black tank and a tri-color tank, and they can be replaced in tandem, or separately.

The Windows driver (which has more features and controls than The Museum of Science and Industry) displays little graphics of how much ink is left in the tanks, but this is really just a guesstimate based on how many printouts you’ve done with which colors, not an actual fuel gauge.

Changing these settings has to be done from the printer’s control panel on your computer, with a USB cable connection. You can’t change them from your Treo. But since this printer is so small, you’ll be using it with both machines anyway. Share it with other computers if you have a home network.

The ip90 can use a dizzying array of paper types and sizes, photo papers, envelopes, labels, regular 8.5" x 11", perforated business cards, Avery label stock you name it. So you get the best of all worlds in that it’ll output anything from super-fast draft mode text to ultra high quality photos, and anything in between. Unless you need to go bigger than 8 _ x 11, this will likely become your main printer for just about any use you can think of.
