Treo 90 The Handheld > The Screen Input SD/MMC Software The Rest Conclusion
The Screen With the Treo's launch we were introduced to a relatively old technology put to new uses. The Treo's CSTN technology is the same type of screen used in the first color laptops. It is 12 bit (4096 colors), which is plenty for most applications, but some photo applications may show banding on photos due to the lack of lots of colors in the same shade. Check out this website for a good comparison. Handspring chose to stay with the 160x160 screen size that has forever plagued most Palm OS devices (with the exception of Sony and Handera).
The screen is outlined with a shiny black square that combined with the screen is exactly the size of the Visor Prisms screen. Alas the Treo 90's screen isn't as large as the Prism's, but it is larger than the m130's. One of the greatest things about the CSTN technology is its versatility. While the Visor Prism couldn't be used outside, the Treo 90 is fairly readable in sunlight - at least in high contrast applications. Black on White is easy to see, but Blue on Black like in the game Zap2016 is near impossible to differentiate. While this is a huge step in the right direction it is far from perfect. Indoors the Treo 90 is a joy to use. No, it doesn't have the brightness of a Prism, but I have yet to see another PDA that do. It does have a slightly bluish/brownish tint to it, but comparing it side to side with a Prism and an m130 it is appears to have the whitest white. The backlight is fairly even, it seems to be brightest in the center and than dimmer on the sides and corners. It doesn't look as uneven as some Sony's that I have seen. I was told by Handspring when I received this preproduction unit that the screen was not the final one. This might explain the slightly brownish tint, but it doesn't explain the hotspot in the upper corner of the screen.
The Treo 90's screen has both contrast and brightness settings. The backlight is always on, but to save battery life you can turn it down to a lower setting by double tapping the power button (a skill that I have yet to master in the 4 weeks that I have had Treo devices). This mode is great for when it is dark as the screen doesn't need to be as bright to be able to see. Next Page: Input >>
