Treo 300

Mon Oct 14, 2002 - 2:39 AM EDT - By Michael Ducker, Dieter Bohn

Conclusion

Updated: Sprint announced new pricing plans for Sprint services - including Vision. With unlimited data available for $10 a month on any plan, this for the first time makes high-speed wireless accessible to all. Because of this, even with the Treo 300's shortcomings, it earns 5 Vinnys - The TreoCentral award of excellence. We can only hope that other carriers bring more sensible plans into play to.

Michael: I don’t believe that the power of 3G has been exploited yet in Palm OS programs. I am only now beginning to see applications that can take advantage of the power of this communicator. The Treo 300 has a lot of potential, and for the most part lives up to it; but because of the lack of applications that really show the power of 3G and the expensive cost of running such a communicator, it just isn’t there yet. Luckily, the communicator itself is not that expensive; Amazon.com is offering it for only $419 after rebates.

I was impressed by the voice quality of the phone, except when i had 0 or 1 bar of service. Sprint offers many complementing services to the Treo 300 and even for the personal user, their prices are the best in the industry. This is the first of a 3G-like system, and there are bugs to be worked out. Hopefully Sprint and Handspring will get that done soon.

Dieter: Despite a few problems getting everything set up, and despite the nasty SMS issue, the Treo 300 is a winner. I’m a big fan. If you’re partial to Sprint, it’s definitely worth a look.
