And the Winner is...

Sun Mar 6, 2011 - 1:06 PM EST - By Annie Latham

On Thursday, market research firm, The Nielsen Company, released a new report based on a survey that took place November 2010 through January 2011, that indicated Android becoming the most popular operating system among smartphone users at 29% (and in all age groups too but ruling 18-24 demographic). Apple and RIM (BlackBerry) both came in at 27%. HP (Palm/webOS) showed up at 4%. Microsoft at 10% and Nokia (Symbian) at 2% round out the numbers.

According to a blog post that accompanied the numbers, RIM and Apple are winners compared to other device makers since "they are the only ones creating and selling smartphones with their respective operating systems."

Seems like there's room for HP (Palm/webOS) to wedge its way in if it can get out of the gate soon with ample developer support.
