Wireless Provider Madness
The Sunday surprise is the news that AT&T Inc. (T) agreed to buy T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom AG (DTE) in a cash-and-stock transaction valued at about $39 billion, a combination that would create America's largest mobile-phone company.
This development comes less than two weeks after the possibility of Sprint buying T-Mobile story broke.
Instead of No. 3 and No. 4 combining forces with different voice technology, you have AT&T, now the second-largest U.S. wireless operator, adding about 34 million customers in a complementary network. This means AT&T would leap over Verizon Wireless to claim the No. 1 position.
No doubt, getting regulatory approval will take a while --putting this deal on ice.
Now the question is, what will Sprint do? Or perhaps, an even bigger question -- what will Verizon do?
Stay tuned.
