Canon PIXMA iP90 Printer

Thu Jan 26, 2006 - 10:21 PM EST - By Harv Laser

Tiny in size but vastly capable

The iP90 is petite, at about 12” wide, 8” deep (with the battery pack installed) and 2” high, tipping the scales at about four pounds, it’s not much bigger than a hardback novel. Being that small, there are a few design compromises in exchange for its size and portability. It’ll only hold about 30 sheets of regular letter paper at a time, there’s no tray to hold printouts as they eject, and the ink tanks are very small, but the paper supply support folds down to form a cover, and the printout slot has its own little door, so when these are closed, you can literally plop the iP90 into a briefcase or a backpack.

As the iP90 is designed for portability, Canon designed the ink tanks so they won’t leak no matter how you tote the printer. This doesn’t mean you can print with it hanging upside down from a trapeze, but no matter how you carry it around, it won’t leak.

This little baby is very fast. It prints up to 16 ppm in black and up to 12 ppm in color, achieving a resolution of up to 4800 x 1200 color dpi. Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) uses a high-performance 1,088-nozzle print head that ejects droplets of ink as small as 2 picoliters with unbelievable accuracy.

The results: impressive resolution and stunning detail on graphics and photos, wherever you're printing from, or lightning fast plain draft printouts, with many quality levels you can set through its driver control panel. You can print duplex (both sides of the paper, when used with a computer, an onscreen prompt will tell you to turn the printouts around and re-insert them to print the other side), booklet format, an endless array of choices.

If you use a digital camera and have been taking your memory cards to a store to get prints, you can forget doing that anymore. With different finishes and sizes of photo paper, the iP90 will spit out prints of such high quality you literally can’t tell them from store-made.
